Hostilities
She folds her pleats
And tucks them in
With a million pins to hold them still
Pulling down a pleat she covers her breast
She then pins it up and conceals the rest!
With her armor in place
She is ready for her WAR
In the streets of the city
Where she battles it all
Dressing up has always been labeled as a woman’s thing. Everyday millions of women dress up. It is a self-imposed part of their daily ritual. Women dress not for fashion, or to boost their self-image, seriously they dress themselves for WAR!
Yes, Women today have to fight this war everyday in one way or the other.
She wears her saree with a million pins… basically to cover her up so that she does not give an undue advantage to a loafer. Its just not just the saree, women of today wear any dress they pick with precaution. Girls wearing their salwars with their duppatta pinned on both sides. It’s a very common sight.
But does the so called society even care that these women go through torture everyday in the city’s roads or buses… those of you who frequent the bus must be aware of the phrases:
“C’mon lady, the bus is crowded!”
“If you feel that you are a princess take an auto”
“As if I am doing this on purpose”
It not just in the buses in any public place if the girl feels harassed it automatically becomes her MISTAKE. Everywhere it is implied that the girl who actually breaks off these barriers is “loose”. It has always been argued that women should dress appropriately to avoid these glances but isn’t this just atrocious that men can get away easily ….this argument is probably one among the numerous others that we follow today. Just because a “mistake” has been done long enough it does not automatically become a “correct act”. It has become a rule of the day and a part of our lifestyles that we no longer even consider questioning them. It is probably high time that people actually start dealing with these social evils seriously. This isn’t another battle for women’s status but clearly a war……
